Is There a Rapid Test for Cholera?
Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by eating or drinking food or water that is contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae.According to WHO, researchers have estimated that every year, there are 1.3 to 4.0 million cases of cholera, and 21,000 to 143,000 deaths worldwide due to the infection.

Vibrio cholerae is a species of gram-negative, highly mobile, facultative anaerobe bacteria with a comma-like shape. Two serogroups of Vibrio cholerae, O1, and O139, are responsible for cholera outbreaks in human populations. Most people infected with Vibrio cholerae do not develop any symptoms, although the bacteria are present in their feces for 1-10 days after infection. This means the bacteria are shed back into the environment, potentially infecting other people. In this challenging context, cholera rapid diagnostic tests have emerged as a transformative tool for surveillance and control.

Hysen V. Cholerae O1/O139 Ag Combo Rapid Test (feces) is a rapid chromatographic immunoassay for the qualitative detection of Vibrio Cholera O1 and O139 in human feces. The kit contains specimen collection tube with a stick for the collection of specimens. Following the collection of the fecal specimen, the collected specimen is mixed thoroughly with the extraction buffer to ensure its transfer from the stick to the solution in the extraction tube. Next, the test cassette is removed from its foil pouch and placed on a flat surface. Then, two drops of the solution containing the processed sample is added to the sample well on the test cassette, and a timer is started. The test kit provides qualitative results indicated by the appearance of the test line (T) and incorporates internal controls confirmed by the appearance of the control line (C) on the test cassette. In order to ensure their validity, the results should be read within 15 minutes following the instruction for use.

Interpretation of Results

POSITIVE:

Vibrio Cholerae O1 Positive:

a clear pink control line (C) and a detectable test line (T2) appears, indicating positive result for Vibrio Cholerae O1 infections.

Vibrio Cholerae O139 Positive:

a clear pink control line (C) and a detectable test line (T1) appears, indicating positive result for Vibrio Cholerae O139 infections.

  1. Cholerae O1 and O139 Positive:

a clear pink control line (C) and two detectable test line (T1 and T2) appears, indicating positive results for both types.

NEGATIVE:

A pink colored band appears only at the control region (C), indicating a negative result for Vibrio Cholerae infections.

INVALID:

No visible band at the control region. Repeat with a new test device. If the test still fails, please contact the distributor with the lot number.
